The Incredible Moving House of the Future
This moving house project is a particular favorite of mine from college, not only because it feels quite retrofuturistic, but also because of what I was limited to. I had to use sustainable materials and had to make everything by hand, which was useful to learn in a world where things are growing to be more digital all the time.
My main inspiration for this project was The Incredibles; the simple shapes and angular lines proved to be a good style guide for this project. When I was planning out what I wanted this project to look like, it was very important to me that I could physically move the train house off the tracks. It was also important to feature at least one prominent curve, which I managed to achieve on the front of the train by soaking the Balsa wood piece in hot water and then slowly bending it around a jig that I had created.
This project also demonstrates how designers like myself can work with incredibly simple materials if the need arises. It was also fun to think about how the project could be achieved with such simple materials during the early design phase.
