It’s A Small World Wall Model
This model is one I designed and produced in my spare time for fun. I’ve always loved the unique twist of art and architecture that artist Mary Blair created when she was designing the original “It’s A Small World” facade. It took quite a bit of time to gather enough reference images that I could use to create the different layers for my model. There are a few differences between my model and the actual real-life facade, with the main one being that I unrolled the front rotunda that has the clock face into a flat wall to better fit with the rest of the pieces.
The final model wound up differing a bit from the initial digital one, mainly because I didn’t have any gold plastic filament to make the gold parts. I also lacked the space to set the model up unless it was hanging on a wall, so I had to condense it down to make it flatter rather than spaced out like in the above photos.
The model itself is made entirely out of foamcore poster board, which was cut out on a laser and then hot glued together, and 3-D printed pieces for the smaller details, all of which I made from scratch. Mounting the pieces to the board proved to be an entirely different challenge because I didn’t want to have to find a giant backing board. So instead, I found a purchased a smaller one and then pushed the model forward slightly so it looked like it’s growing beyond the frame.
